Academic Honorees

STANFORD, Calif. - Juniors Matt Winaker and Andrew Summerville earned Academic All-District honors from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Thursday.

The distinction awards the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. Academic All-District honorees advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America® honorees will be selected later this month.

This is the second straight year Summerville has earned CoSIDA Academic All-District recognition. A management science and engineering major, Summerville is a co-term student at Stanford, meaning he is set to graduate in three years and has begun work on his master's degree. Summerville was also a first-team Academic All-Pac-12 selection in 2016, and maintains a team-best 3.87 GPA. On the field, the southpaw ranks among the top 10 in the Pac-12 in strikeouts as well as fewest earned runs, hits and walks allowed. The Seattle, Washington, native combined on the program's fifth one-hitter (vs. Kansas on Feb. 24), and earned Pac-12 Player of the Week honors on Feb. 28.

A science, technology and society major, Winaker was also a first-team Academic All-Pac-12 honoree in 2016 and has maintained a 3.65 GPA. The reigning Pac-12 Player of the Week currently leads Stanford with a .311 batting average and ranks in the top 10 in the Pac-12 with 34 runs, 29 walks and a .438 on-base percentage. His four home runs in Pac-12 play is second-most in the conference. Earlier this season he became the first Cardinal in three years to hit two home runs in a game, and the first to lead off a game with a home run since 2010. Defensively, the first baseman did not make an error last season, and recently had his errorless streak snapped at 79 games.

Summerville, Winaker and the Cardinal currently own the longest active winning streak in the nation. No. 13 Stanford (28-12, 11-7 Pac-12) is second in the Pac-12 and heads to Arizona State for a three-game series beginning on Friday.
