STANFORD, Calif. – Seattle Sounders forward Jordan Morris, already on the U.S. Men's National Team for upcoming 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, was named by U.S. Soccer to the preliminary 40-man roster for this summer's Gold Cup.
The U.S. will begin Gold Cup training camp June 25 in Nashville, Tenn., before traveling to East Hartford, Conn., for a warm-up game against Ghana on July 1 at Pratt & Whitney Stadium. The MNT then returns to Nashville for its tournament opener against Panama on July 8 at Nissan Stadium, ventures to Tampa's Raymond James Stadium for a July 12 clash with Martinique and closes out group play on July 15 against Nicaragua at FirstEnergy Stadium in Cleveland, Ohio.
Tournament rules require the final 23-player roster to be turned in to CONCACAF no later than June 27. All players on the final list must come from the preliminary roster.
Morris is currently with the USMNT in Commerce City, Colo. as it prepares to return to 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifying. The United States hosts Trinidad & Tobago tomorrow evening at 4:50 p.m. PT at Dick's Sporting Goods Park.
Morris earned his 15th cap for the MNT and third in 2017 when he came on in the 70th minute of a World Cup Qualifying warmup against Venezuela last Saturday. The 2016 MLS Rookie of the Year scored his second international goal in a 1-0 friendly victory against Jamaica in Chattanooga, Tenn. on Feb. 3. He also appeared in a scoreless draw against Serbia on Jan. 29 in San Diego, Calif.
Morris has scored twice in 13 matches for the Sounders this season. He was named MLS Rookie of the Year during his debut campaign a year ago after scoring 12 times, a record for a U.S.-born rookie. His six game-winning goals were second in the league and a MLS rookie record and Morris came up big in the playoffs in leading Seattle to its first MLS Cup title. He recorded an assist in a 3-0 home victory over FC Dallas in the first leg of the Western Conference Semifinals and scored in both legs of Seattle's 3-1 aggregate win over the Colorado Rapids in the Western Conference Championship.
