SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sixteen Stanford-affiliated athletes are scheduled to brave the heat and compete at the USA Track and Field Championships, which begin Thursday at Hornet Stadium.

Among them are nine current Cardinal, with seven competing in the senior championships and two in the juniors (under 20). The total Stanford count includes five alums and two incoming freshmen. The senior and junior championships are running concurrently.

At stake in the senior competition are spots on the U.S. team for the IAAF World Championships in London from Aug. 4-13. The top two juniors qualify for the Pan Am Junior Championships in Lima, Peru, July 21-23.

Stanford senior Valarie Allman already has reached the World Championships standard in the women's discus and needs only a top-three finish Thursday night to earn her first berth on the U.S. senior national team.

Cardinal junior Harrison Williams is close. His school record of 8,032 points from the 2016 NCAA Championships is near the World standard of 8,100. Williams, like Allman, redshirted this season and has focused on this meet. This will be Williams' first decathlon this year. However, he will have to contend with temperatures that are expected to reach 108 degrees on Thursday, the first day of the two-day competition.

Members of the 2017 Stanford roster, including redshirts, scheduled to compete in the senior competition:

Men: Trevor Danielson (javelin), Harrison Williams (decathlon).
Women: Valarie Allman (discus), Olivia Baker (800 meters), Vanessa Fraser (5,000), Lena Giger (shot put), Rebecca Mehra (1,500).
