STANFORD, Calif. – Grant Fisher's NCAA outdoor championship in the men's 5,000 meters highlighted a Stanford track and field season that cannot be assessed without a sense of anticipation for next year.

Stanford redshirted several key athletes so that they will be available in 2018 when the Cardinal plays host to the Pac-12 Championships and looks to make an impact at NCAA's.

Last week's U.S. Championships brought that point home when Valarie Allman captured third in the discus and Vanessa Fraser was seventh in the 5,000. Both redshirted this year as seniors to have a fifth season ahead. Allman became the first Stanford athlete with eligibility remaining to make a U.S. Olympic or world championship team in 12 years.

Of the eight Stanford athletes who advanced to the NCAA outdoor championships, seven return, and five earned first-team All-America honors in Eugene. In fact, Stanford returns 21 All-Americans – 13 women, eight men – and 12 are first-team All-Americans, including 11 in individual events. An All-America first-team distinction is earned by placing among the top eight at the NCAA indoor or outdoor championships.

Stanford will possess some strong firepower. Cardinal returnees have combined for 16 individual top-5 NCAA finishes – one first, five seconds, three thirds, two fourths, and five fifths. Those returning top-5 placers are Fisher, Dylan Duvio, Sean McGorty, and Harrison Williams for the men. And Allman, Fraser, Christina Aragon, Olivia Baker, Elise Cranny, Mackenzie Little, and Fiona O'Keeffe for the women.
