STANFORD, Calif. – Several members of Stanford's men's swimming and diving team competed last week in the Arena Pro Swim Series Santa Clara at the George Haines International Aquatic Center.
The event took place over the span of four days and wrapped up on Sunday night, with both current and future Cardinal competing. The event serves as a tune-up for the upcoming United States World Championship Trials (June 27 – July 1), and was highlighted by third place in the 800-meter freestyle by freshman True Sweetser and second place in the 400-meter individual medley by sophomore Abrahm DeVine.
Last month, 2017-18 team captain and 12-time All-American Sam Perry qualified for the World Championships to represent New Zealand in the 50-meter freestyle and 400-meter freestyle relay.
Thursday
- Sweetser (8:01.44) finished third in the 800 free to open the meet. Junior Liam Egan (8:05.10) was seventh, while freshman James Murphy (8:21.84) finished 18th.
Friday
- The Cardinal's distance swimmers took three of the top nine places in the 400-meter freestyle, led by Sweetser (3:52.83) in fourth place with Egan (3:53.17) not far behind in fifth. Freshman Grant Shoults (3:59.75) took ninth, while Murphy (4:01.39) took 29th.
- Andrew Liang (52.98) was Stanford's highest finisher in the 100-meter butterfly, finishing fourth. Sam Perry (54.96) finished 18th, Abrahm DeVine (54.88) was 21st and Brad Zdroik (55.90) took 33rd.
Saturday
- Abrahm DeVine (4:17.57) touched second in the 400 IM to start the evening finals session, with incoming freshman Alex Liang (4:30.20) adding a 12th-place finish.
- Sweetser (1:51.81) continued his strong showing with a 15th-place swim in the 200-meter free. Egan (1:50.91) was also in the field, finishing 19th.
- Stanford was well-represented in the 200-meter backstroke, with Curtis Ogren (2:04.99) touching the fastest in eighth place. Freshman Benjamin Ho (2:05.36) finished 14th and Jack Walsh (2:08.19) added a 30th-place finish.
- Sam Perry (23.11) was the Cardinal's fastest finisher in the 50-meter freestyle, touching 14th. Sophomore Cole Cogswell (23.84) and Ho (24.10) were also in the field, finishing 28th and 31st, respectively.
Sunday
- Alex Liang (2:02.35) continued his impressive showing in the 200-meter butterfly to start the final session of the meet with an 11th-place showing.
- Freshman Hank Poppe (1:03.34) finished eighth in the 100-meter breaststroke, with junior Matt Anderson (1:04.80) taking 18th place.
- Ho (58.06) was Stanford's highest finisher in the 100-meter backstroke, finishing 15th.
- Sweetser (15:23.95) capped the week with a fifth-place finish in the 1,500-meter freestyle, while Egan (15:57.40) was 16th.
