Stanford Stacks Team USA

STANFORD, Calif. – Team USA will have heavy dose of Cardinal for the upcoming FINA World League Super Final in Shanghai. Eight of the 13 players named to the women's national team roster on Monday are from Stanford.

Five are alumnae or soon-to-be alumnae in Jamie Neushul, Kiley Neushul, Melissa Seidemann, Maggie Steffens and Gabby Stone, two are current undergraduates in Makenzie Fischer and Jordan Raney and one is an incoming freshman in Aria Fischer. Three players from UCLA and one each from Arizona State and UC Irvine fill out the remaining spots on the squad.

The United States opens play against the Netherlands at 11:40 p.m. PT this evening. The team will also face Japan and Russia in group play before the quarterfinal round begins on June 9.

Team USA is coming off gold at the Kunshan Cup in China, which serves as a preliminary event for the Super Final. That roster featured seven Cardinal. Steffens joined her teammates over the weekend.

The United States opened that tournament 3-0, beating the Netherlands, China and Russia in pool play by a combined score of 37-18. Kiley Neushul scored four times to propel her team to a 10-1 quarterfinal win over Japan, which also included two goals from Seidemann and once each from the Fischer sisters.

The U.S. beat Russia 17-3 in the semifinals behind four scores from Jamie Neushul, three from Makenzie Fischer, two each from Aria Fischer and Kiley Neushul and one from Raney. Kiley Neushul and Seidemann both scored twice in the championship against Greece, an 11-8 shootout victory. The Fischers each scored once in that win.

In the cage during the knockout rounds of the Kunshan Cup, Stone made four saves against Japan and five against Russia.
