STANFORD, Calif. – Highlighted by three NCAA championships, Stanford captured its record fourth Women's Athletics Program Capital One Cup with the 2016-17 crown, Capital One announced Thursday.
 
Stanford, which also won the Women's Athletics Program Capital One Cup during the 2010-11, 2011-12 and 2014-15 seasons, owns the most Women's Athletics Program Capital One Cup trophies with four in the first seven years of the Capital One Cup program.
 
The Cardinal captured five national championships during the 2016-17 season, winning NCAA women's titles in volleyball, swimming and diving and water polo. Stanford also claimed the NCAA title in men's soccer and the Intercollegiate Rowing Association national championship in women's lightweight rowing.  
 
Stanford's women's athletic programs, which totaled 12 top-10 finishes in 2016-17, captured the Capital One Cup lead in the fall and held the top spot throughout the year, en route to a Capital One Cup points record of 175.5. USC finished second with 129 points.

"It is a result of hard work, dedication, and sacrifice that the women student-athletes of Stanford have earned the most Capital One Cup wins in the history of the program. Each and every student-athlete in this program should be proud of the remarkable legacy they are building for themselves and for our institution."
 
Stanford placed fourth in the Men's Athletics Program Capital One Cup standings. Highlighted by the men's soccer NCAA title, the Cardinal men's programs registered seven top-10 finishes and totaled 94.5 points. Ohio State won the 2016-17 Men's Athletics Program Capital One Cup with 111 points, while Florida finished second and North Carolina placed third.

Currently in its seventh year, the Capital One Cup recognizes NCAA Division I athletics programs for their cumulative on-field performance across multiple men's and women's sports. Since 2011, Capital One has contributed $2.8 million in student-athlete scholarships. In recognition of this outstanding achievement in 2017, the Ohio State men and Stanford women will receive a combined $400,000 in student-athlete scholarships and will be honored at The 25th ESPYS live on ABC July 12 at 5 p.m. PT from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.
 
Each year, programs earn points based on its teams' top-10 finishes in NCAA Division I championships and in final official coaches' polls across 21 women's and 20 men's sports as they compete to win the Capital One Cup trophy and a combined $400,000 in scholarships for student-athletes.
