TRUJILLO, Peru – Incoming freshman Ashlan Best won the women's 200 meters at the Pan American Under-20 Track and Field Championships on Saturday and returned to her native Canada with a full collection of gold, silver, and bronze medals.
Best ran a lifetime best 23.27 to earn her first international victory, at the junior championships of the Western Hemisphere. Symone Mason of the United States was second in 23.42.
Saturday was a busy day for Best, who ran two rounds of the 200 and the second leg of the bronze medal-winning Canadian 4x100 team (45.14). She finished the weekend by running the third leg of Canada's 4x400, which ran 3:33.19 to place second to the U.S.
Best has totaled five medals while representing Canada, following 4x400 bronze medals at the 2016 World U20 Championships and 2015 World Youth Championships. This was her first international medal in an individual event, though she was a finalist and sixth-place finisher at the World U20 meet in Poland.
Best joined another member of the Stanford class of ''21, Liam Christensen, as a medalist. Christensen won bronze in the men's javelin.
