STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford men's and women's track and field teams each were recognized as All-Academic Teams by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association on Thursday.
The Cardinal women carried a 3.55 combined grade-point average and the men had a 3.35.
There were 218 NCAA Division I women's teams included on the academic lists, in which a 3.00 GPA is the standard. There were 140 men's teams.
Despite the large amount of All-Academic Team selections, Stanford indeed distinguished itself. Stanford was among 136 schools to earn All-Academic honors among both men and women. However, only 19 schools, including Stanford, had GPA's of at least 3.35 for each of its men's and women's teams.
As a fun exercise, GoStanford.com combined this list with the USTFCCCA's Program of the Year standings, which used NCAA results in cross country, and indoor and outdoor track and field to determine the nation's best overall programs for the 2016-17 academic year. Their men's rankings were 18 deep and the women's 19.
Of the teams on either Program of the Year lists, only five also made the All-Academic Team lists with GPA's of at least 3.35 for both men and women. But, of those, only Stanford also had men's and women's teams on both Program of the Year rankings.
Therefore, Stanford was able to set itself apart even among hundreds of academically high-achieving track and field programs.
