STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford national champion distance runner Grant Fisher was named NCAA Division I Men's Outdoor Track Scholar Athlete of the Year by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association of America on Friday.
Fisher, a rising junior, not only is the reigning NCAA 5,000-meter champion, but he carries a 3.49 cumulative grade-point average and declared a major of electrical engineering. This is his second national USTFCCCA Scholar-Athlete crown during the 2016-17 academic year. He earlier earned the organization's cross country honor.
Fisher is Stanford's first men's track winner since Amaechi Morton in 2011 and 2012. Sean McGorty was the men's indoor track honoree last year.
Fisher heads a large contingent of Stanford All-Academic honorees, 29 altogether – 18 women and 11 men. Athletes are nominated if they have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25, reached NCAA competition indoors or outdoors, had a high enough national or regional ranking, and had been at the school for at least a year going into 2016-17.
