TAIPEI, Taiwan – Stanford's Valarie Allman captured the silver medal at the World University Games on Thursday, throwing the discus 191 feet, 5 inches (58.36 meters).
The competition completed an incredible season for Allman, a senior who placed third at the U.S. Championships and competed at the IAAF World Championships in London two weeks ago.
Allman, representing the United States, was 11th after her first two throws and in danger of not advancing to the eight-thrower final, but got off a toss of 183-2 (55.83m) on her third throw to move up to fourth and out of danger. Her fifth throw put her into medal position. Germany's Kristin Pudenz threw 193-10 (59.09m) in the opening round and the distance stood for the victory.
Stanford teammate Mackenzie Little, representing Australia, was 16th in the women's javelin on Wednesday, at 170-10 (52.09m).
It was Allman's second appearance at the World University Games. She was fifth in 2015 in Gwangju City, South Korea.
Allman set a Cobb Track and Angell Field record this year when she won the Cardinal Classic at 212-3 (64.69m) and graduated in June with a degree in product design. She will have a fifth year of eligibility in 2018.
This meet closes the book on the Stanford track and field season, which began with the UW Indoor Preview on January 14. Allman won the 20-pound weight throw in that meet, more than eight months ago.
