On Top At Poppy

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Three players broke par to propel host Stanford into the lead Monday after the first round of the 22nd Stanford Intercollegiate hosted by Dr. Condoleezza Rice at warm and windless Poppy Hills Golf Course.

Fourteen schools and 15 teams are competing in the 54-hole stroke play tournament.
Freshman Mika Liu posted six birdies on a postcard day on the Monterey Peninsula and finished with a 3-under 68 to pace the Cardinal. Sophomore Andrea Lee added a 69 and sophomore Albane Valenzuela a 70.

"I'm very pleased," said Anne Walker, the Margot and Mitch Milias Director of Women's Golf. "It was a perfect day for scoring and we took advantage of it against a tough field."

Stanford compiled a best four out of five scoring total of 4-under 280, while defending champion UCLA is second at 4-over 288. Washington is third at 7-over 291.

Senior Hannah Kim of Northwestern is the individual leader. She fired a bogey-free 5-under 66, carding five birdies.

Liu is tied for second with Wenyung Keh of Washington, while Lee grabbed a share of fourth and Valenzuela is knotted for sixth. Senior Shannon Aubert (73) is tied for 20th and sophomore Madie Chou (77) is tied for 56th.

The Cardinal is also competing with a B team. Sophomore Ziyi Wang (74) is tied for 24th, followed by Calli Ringsby (76), Kelsey Zeng (76) and Jisoo Keel (76) at 42nd, and Sierra Kersten (77) at 56th.

"Four of our top five scores were from underclassmen, which was nice to see," Walker said.

The second round will be played Tuesday, followed by the final round on Wednesday. The Stanford A team starts off the first tee at 9:20 a.m. PT, while the B team goes off the 10th tee at 8:55 a.m. PT.
