Stanford Stymied

STOCKTON, Calif. – A last-minute goal by Corinne Zanolli wasn't enough to power the No. 17 Cardinal Friday as it fell 2-1 to Pacific in America East action.

The Tigers (7-7, 3-4 AE) came out hunting as less than a minute into the game Pacific struck to make it 1-0. While the Cardinal (8-7, 2-2 AE) offense kept the pressure up with seven shots to UOP's six, the Tigers made it count with a goal in the 34th minute to send it to the half with a 2-0 Pacific lead.

The second half produced a changed Cardinal as noted by head coach Tara Danielson who stated, "I'll take our second half effort any day. The way the strikers played in the second half influenced the backfield to play with confidence and aggression."

The team effort continued to elevate as Stanford dominated Pacific in shots with eight in the half, though Marlise Van Tonder did work as she amassed four saves. Stanford continued its efforts offensively, though were only able to find fruition on its sole goal off a corner as time expired.

"This Stanford team needs to be persistent and tenacious" added Danielson, "We need to burn with purpose and play for the team."

The Cardinal will return to action on Sunday with a 3 p.m. game against Cal which will be aired live on Pac-12 Networks at home on Varsity Turf..
