Head of the Charles Crown

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Three-time defending Intercollegiate Rowing Association champion Stanford lightweight rowing added another trophy to its collection, capturing the lightweight eight title at the 53rd annual Head of the Charles regatta near Boston.

Under the direction of 2017 Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association National Coach of the Year Kate Bertko, Stanford captured its first Head of the Charles crown in program history.

The lightweight eight, stroked by sophomore Kate Hickey, completed the championship final in a course-record time of 15:46.726 to win by 13 seconds over second-place Boston University (15:53.867). Hickey stroked the eight to the 2017 IRA crown this past spring in Gold River, California, as Stanford and BU also finished 1-2 in the IRA Grand Final.

The lightweight four, stroked by senior Hannah Levy, placed second in its final, completing the course in 18:23.591. Georgetown took first place with a time of 17:56.443.

Stanford will begin its spring championship season in early March.
