STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford closes its season-opening five-game homestand with a Big Monday showdown against No. 9 North Carolina at Maples Pavilion. The game, part of ESPN's Big Monday package, is slated for an 8:30 p.m. PT tip-off on The Farm.

THE HAASE-WILLIAMS CONNECTION
Stanford's Jerod Haase and North Carolina's Roy Williams have become close friends over the last 25 years. After a season at Cal, Haase transferred to Kansas in 1993 to play for Williams. Haase started 99 of his 101 games in his three-year Kansas career, where he helped lead the Jayhawks to three conference titles and scored 1,264 points. Following his playing career, Haase spent 13 years on Williams' staff with Kansas and North Carolina. Haase got his start as Kansas' Director of Operations from 1999-2003, where the Jayhawks reached the 2002 Final Four and the 2003 national championship game. When Williams was named head coach at North Carolina prior to the 2003-04 season, he brought Haase with him as an assistant coach and director of operations, a title Haase held from 2003-09. Haase then served exclusively as an assistant coach on Williams' staff during his final three seasons with the Tar Heels, before he was hired as the head coach at UAB prior to the 2012-13 season.

MONDAY'S GAME SOLD OUT
Monday's Stanford-North Carolina game was announced as a sellout this past Friday. It is the first sellout for a men's basketball game at 7,233-seat Maples Pavilion since the Cardinal welcomed Oregon to campus on March 1, 2015.

UNCHARTED STRETCH OF NATIONALLY-RANKED COMPETITON
Stanford's Monday showdown with No. 9 North Carolina begins a four-game stretch that could feature as many as four top-20 opponents (including three top-10 foes) in a seven-day span. Following Monday's game with the No. 9 Tar Heels, Stanford will head to the PK80 Invitational in Portland, where it will face No. 8 Florida on Thursday (Nov. 23). Depending on Thursday's results, Stanford will either face No. 17 Gonzaga or Ohio State on Friday (Nov. 24). The results of its first two games in the PK80 Invitational determine its final opponent on Sunday (Nov. 26), which will be against either No. 1 Duke, Butler (RV), Texas (RV) or Portland State.

STANFORD AGAINST RANKED OPPONENTS
UNC is Stanford's first ranked opponent of the year. The Cardinal finished 0-8 vs. ranked foes in the Associated Press poll last year. It's most recent game vs. a ranked opponent was a 75-73 loss to No. 6 Oregon at Maples Pavilion on Feb. 25, 2017. Stanford has nine games against current top-25 teams this season, including a Dec. 21 matchup with No. 4 Kansas in Sacramento.

JEROD HAASE AGAINST RANKED OPPONENTS
Head Coach Jerod Haase owns a 2-16 all-time record against nationally-ranked teams. He played 10 ranked foes as the head coach at UAB, leading the Blazers to a win over No. 9/10 Iowa State (60-59) in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on March 19, 2015 in Louisville, and a victory over No. 16/16 North Carolina (63-59) in Birmingham, on Dec. 1, 2013.

STANFORD AND THE CHAMPS
Stanford has played or will play each of the last four NCAA champions (all nonconference teams) either in the same season they won the title or the following season. The Cardinal meet the defending NCAA champion North Carolina Tar Heels on Monday. Stanford faced 2016 champion Villanova the year they won the title, playing Wildcats in the NIT Season Tip-Off in Brooklyn, New York, in November of that season. Duke, the 2015 NCAA Champions, and Stanford also met in Brooklyn, New York, at the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic in November of the season the Blue Devils captured the crown. Similar to Monday's scenario, in January of 2015 Stanford hosted the 2014 NCAA champion Connecticut Huskies at Maples Pavilion. The Cardinal defeated UCONN, 72-59, on Jan. 17, 2015.

POST PRESENCE
Stanford's starting post players, forwards Reid Travis and Michael Humphrey, have combined to average 24.3 points and 20.4 rebounds per game. Travis is third in the Pac-12 in scoring with a team-best 23.0 ppg and 18th in the conference in rebounding with 7.7 rpg average. Humphrey is averaging a double-double with 12.7 rpg (second in the Pac-12) and 11.3 ppg. Stanford played a pair of games in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, in 1985 and 1988. The other seven games in the series were contested on a neutral court. FRESHMAN FOCUS
Despite one of the most veteran rosters in the nation, Stanford's freshman class has contributed valuable minutes. Three freshmen - Daejon Davis, Oscar Da Silva and Isaac White - are averaging more than 26 minutes per game. White ranks third on the team in scoring (11.0 ppg) and Da Silva ranks second on the team in rebounding (7.8 rpg).

All three freshmen have started the Cardinal's last two games, marking the first time since January 27, 1983 (at Washington) that three true freshmen were in the starting lineup. In that contest, Keith Ramee, Andy Fischer and Earl Koberlein earned the starting nod.

TOP-TIER RECRUITING CLASS
After signing a consensus top-25 national recruiting class last season, the Cardinal once again inked one of the nation's top classes for 2018. On Nov. 8, Stanford announced the signing of 6-5 guard Cormac Ryan from New York, New York, and 7-0 forward Keenan Fitzmorris of Overland Park, Kansas, Fitzmorris is the younger brother of Stanford women's volleyball All-American Audriana Fitzmorris.

PETER SAUER CAPTAINSHIP
Head coach Jerod Haase announced the establishment of the Peter Sauer Captainship in September, naming Reid Travis, Dorian Pickens and Michael Humphrey captains. The three will wear patches on their uniforms honoring the legacy of the late Peter Sauer, a team captain and leader of Stanford's 1998 Final Four team.

EFFECTIVE AT THE FREE THROW LINE
Stanford ranks third in the Pac-12 in free throw percentage, shooting 77.5 percent (69-89) from the line in the first three games. The Cardinal was 35-of-39 from the FT line against Pacific on Sunday.

CARDINAL UNDERWAY IN SECOND YEAR OF JEROD HAASE ERA
Head coach Jerod Haase, who has appeared in the NCAA Tournament 19 times as either a player or coach in his career, looks to lead the Cardinal back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since Stanford's 2014 NCAA Sweet Sixteen run. Haase owns a 96-71 career record in his sixth season (four at UAB and two at Stanford) as a head coach.

THE FOURTH-YEAR CLASS
The four members of Stanford's fourth-year class - Reid Travis, Dorian Pickens Michael Humphrey and Robert Cartwright - accounted for 62.6 percent of the team's scoring and 55.4 percent of the team's rebounding last season. Pickens and Humphrey are true seniors, while Travis and Cartwright have each had their medical hardship waivers granted and are redshirt juniors with another year of eligibility remaining after this season. Cartwright missed the entire 2015-16 season with a compound fracture of his right forearm sustained in preseason practice on Nov. 2, 2015. Travis was forced to miss the final 22 games of the 2015-16 season with a right leg injury.

PICKENS ON TARGET FROM BEYOND THE ARC
Dorian Pickens, the only player to start all 31 games last season, posted at least one three-pointer in all but four games, with multiple three-pointers in 19 contests during his junior season. He ranked ninth in the Pac-12 in three-point field goals made in conference play (39, 2.2) and 11th overall (67, 2.2) last year. Pickens was Stanford's leading three-point shooter (67-of-169, 39.6 percent). The forward registered a career-high seven three-pointers (7-of-10) against Idaho last season. Pickens' 0-for-5 performance from three-point range in the season opener was only the second time in his last 11 games he did not post at least one three-point field goal in a game. He had his consecutive games played streak of 63 snapped on this past Tuesday, missing the game with a left foot injury.

FIFTH IN PAC-12 PRESEASON POLL
