STANFORD, Calif. - The second straight Stanford wrestling dual came down to the heavyweight bout. This time, Maryland's Youssif Heida, ranked No. 15, scored a last-second takedown to defeat No. 12 Nathan Butler and give the Terrapins the 18-15 dual win on Saturday.
Stanford (2-2, 1-0 Pac-12) picked up bonus points in three of its four wins. The dual took place outside at Stanford Football's Fan Fest, where more than 12,000 people passed through.
Sophomore Gabriel Townsell put on a show, picking up a 17-5 major decision over Jhared Simmons at 133 pounds. He moves to 4-3 on the season and 3-1 in duals this season. Redshirt freshman Requir van der Merwe also registered a major decision, defeating Adam Whitesell in a dominating 15-2 performance at 149 pounds. He is now 7-2 overall and 2-1 in duals.
No. 16 Keaton Subjeck was up big early over Josh Ugalde at 174 pounds, and held on to win it 9-5. He remains undefeated on the season at 8-0.
Redshirt freshman 197-pounder Nathan Traxler secured a 16-3 major decision against Niko Cappello to tie the team score at 15-15. It was the first dual win of Traxler's career as he improves to 5-3 on the year.
Stanford was without its regular starters at 157 pounds and 184 pounds. Redshirt freshman Matt Mills wrestled up a weight class at 184 in his collegiate debut. Ninth-ranked Connor Schram (6-1) suffered his first loss of the season in an 8-7 decision to Maryland's Brandon Cray at 125 pounds.
Stanford will be back in action on Sunday at the Roadrunner Open at the Icardo Center in Bakersfield, California
