STANFORD, Calif. - Bradford M. Freeman Director of Football David Shaw was named the Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week, while senior defensive tackle Harrison Phillips earned Lott IMPACT Player of the Week accolades on Tuesday.
On Saturday, Shaw and the Cardinal turned a 20-17 deficit into a 38-20 lead in a span of 3:36 in the fourth quarter to close out the regular season with its third straight win. The Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week honors the football coach whose program embodies the award's three pillars of scholarship, leadership and integrity, while also having success on the playing field during the previous week.
"Stanford is well-renowned for its academic excellence with its student athletes, and Coach Shaw has done a superb job of continuing this tradition," said Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl chairman Percy Vaughn. "His performance on and off the field truly exemplifies what the Dodd Trophy is all about."
Phillips, who was also named the Lott IMPACT Player of the Week on Oct. 30, finished with six tackles and led the Cardinal with a season-high 2.0 sacks and 3.0 tackles for loss in Stanford's second win over a top-10 opponent in three weeks.
The annual The Lott IMPACT Trophy is given to the player who exhibits the same characteristics Ronnie Lott embodied during his distinguished career: integrity, maturity, performance, academics, community and tenacity. A team captain, Phillips is a double major and set to graduate early in December. The CoSIDA academic all-district honoree is second on the team with 87 tackles this season and has a team-high 16.5 tackles for loss, 7.0 sacks and two fumble recoveries.
No. 14 Stanford (9-3) won the Pac-12 North for the fourth time in seven years under Shaw, and will take on No. 11 USC (10-2) in the Pac-12 Championship Game on Friday at 5 p.m. PT. ESPN will televise the game.
