INDIAN WELLS, Calif. - Sophomore Emily Arbuthnott and freshman Michaela Gordon captured the doubles title on Sunday afternoon at the inaugural Oracle ITA National Fall Championships.
Paired together last month and competing in only their second tournament, Arbuthnott and Gordon defeated the nation's No. 6-ranked duo of Alexa Bortles and Arianne Hartono from Mississippi 6-4, 6-1 in the final.
After winning their first three matches on the strength of a super-tiebreaker, Arbuthnott and Gordon made quicker work of their final two opponents. The Cardinal tandem followed a 6-1, 7-5 semifinal victory over Duke's Kelly Chen and Samantha Harris with Sunday's statement win.
Arbuthnott and Gordon closed out the fall with an 8-1 record, having also reached the doubles semifinals of the ITA Northwest Regional Championships last month at Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
It's the second title for Gordon, who claimed the singles crown at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships. Arbuthnott, who as a rookie last season teamed up with Taylor Davidson to form Stanford's No. 1 doubles team, secured her first career title.
