Home Openers

STANFORD, Calif. – The Stanford wrestling team will host Cal Baptist and Pac-12 foe CSU Bakersfield for its home openers on Saturday beginning at 2 p.m. in Burnham Pavilion.

Stanford (0-1, 0-0 Pac-12) returns five NCAA qualifiers and two All-Americans to its roster for head coach Jason Borrelli, who is now in his 10th season at the helm of the program. The Cardinal dropped a 22-12 decision at No. 8 Virginia Tech last week in its season opener.

Stanford also wrestled at the Hokie Open wiith redshirt seniors Connor Schram (125 pounds) and Keaton Subjeckk (174 pounds) taking home titles. The Cardinal had seven placewinners overall, including redshirt freshman Nathan Traxler, who upset then-No. 8 Danny Chaid of North Carolina in sudden victory to reach the finals at 197 pounds.

Schram, who is the highest-ranked Cardinal at No. 9, has gone back down to 125 pounds this season, where he was an All-American at the weight in 2016. Subjeck, a two-time NCAA qualifier and ranked No. 16 nationally, has moved up to 174 pounds this season after competing at 165 in 2016-17.

Fellow redshirt senior Nathan Butler (285 pounds), who was a Pac-12 Champion as a redshirt freshman in 2015 and is a three-time NCAA qualifier, finished as a runner-up at the Hokie Open. He is currently ranked No. 12 in the InterMat polls.

Redshirt junior Paul Fox, who comes in at No. 11 via InterMat, had a strong opening weekend before having to medically forfeit his final match of the Hokie Open due to injury. From unseeded to earning All-America honors with a seventh-place finish at 157 pounds last March, Fox became the 20th wrestler in program history to become an All-American. Stanford wrestlers have combined to earn 27 All-America honors overall.

Cal Baptist is 2-0 to start the season with wins over Embry-Riddle (28-12), which is ranked No. 8 in the NAIA, and Mt. San Antonio College (37-9). The Lancers are led by senior 165 pounds Christian Smith, who is ranked fifth in the NAIA.

CSU Bakersfield (2-1, 0-0 Pac-12) opened the 2017-18 campaign with wins against Buffalo (22-14) and Bucknell (26-10) before falling at No. 18 Edinboro (34-9). The Roadrunners boast three ranked wrestlers, including redshirt senior No. 11 Matt Williams at 197 pounds. Redshirt sophomore Lorenzo De La Riva is 17th at 165 pounds, while redshirt sophomore Russell Rohlfing comes in at No. 19 at 141 pounds.

The Cardinal will remain on The Farm next week to host Maryland in an outdoor dual on Saturday, Nov. 18. The Cardinal and Terrapins will face off at the Football Fan Fest before Stanford football takes on Cal in the Big Game.
