STANFORD, Calif. - Seniors Jesse Burkett and Harrison Phillips were named second team Academic All-America on Thursday by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
This is the first time Stanford has two Academic All-Americans in the same season since Chase Beeler (first team) and Owen Marecic (second team) in 2010.
Phillips is the fourth defensive lineman in program history to earn Academic All-America accolades and first since Harry Anderson in 2014. Burkett is Stanford's sixth offensive lineman named Academic All-America, and first since Beeler.
Burkett is the Cardinal's starting center and holds a 3.50 grade-point average as a double major in Japanese and symbolic systems. The St. Augustine, Florida, product has led the Stanford offense to its fifth-best rushing season in school history, and was a catalyst for unanimous All-America running back Bryce Love.
Phillips, who also was a finalist for the Lott IMPACT Trophy, led all FBS defensive linemen with 100 tackles. The team captain and Omaha, Nebraska, native led the Cardinal with 17.0 tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks and two fumble recoveries. He is set to graduate two quarters early as a double major in science, technology and society, and sociology.
Burkett and Phillips helped lead the Cardinal (9-4) to the Pac-12 North Division title and Pac-12 Championship Game. Stanford will face TCU (10-3) in the Valero Alamo Bowl on Dec. 28 in San Antonio, Texas. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m. (PT), and ESPN will broadcast the game.
