STANFORD, Calif. – The Stanford women's lightweight rowing program will officially open the Kate Bertko era this weekend as the Cardinal competes in the season-opening San Diego Crew Classic on Mission Bay.
The two-day regatta is annually regarded as one of the top events nationwide in the spring season. Racing begins shortly after 7 a.m. PT on Saturday and will run through late afternoon on Sunday.
The Cardinal varsity eight will race in Heat A of the Cal Cup at 7:42 a.m. PT on Saturday against Sacramento State, San Diego State, Villanova and Southern Methodist. The top three finishers will advance to Sunday's Grand Final.
Stanford will also compete in Heat 1 of the open eight Carley Copley Cup prelim at 12:20 p.m. PT against USC, Washington State, San Diego, Long Beach State, UCSB and Colorado. All boats will advance to Sunday's Grand Final.
Bertko, one of the United States' most decorated lightweight rowers and a 2016 Olympian, was introduced as Stanford's women's lightweight rowing head coach on Sept. 9, 2016. The Cardinal women's lightweight rowing program has won the Intercollegiate Rowing Association title each of the last two seasons.

Following this weekend's racing, Stanford will head to Mercer Lake in New Jersey for the Knecht Cup, next weekend, April 8-9.
