REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. – No. 11 Stanford men's rowing defeated No. 20 Oregon State in the varsity eight race on the first day of the Stanford Invitational Friday afternoon at Redwood Shores.
The Stanford varsity eight raced down the course in 6:01.2 to defeat Oregon State (6:04.4) by a length to claim the victory over the Beavers.

"I am very proud of our varsity crew, how they responded," Stanford head coach Craig Amerkhanian said. "They had a good race. Tomorrow should be a fun day of racing at Redwood Shores."
In the novice eight race, Oregon State (6:12.4) won by a length over Stanford (6:15.6) in the final competition of the day between the two Pac-12 crews.
The Stanford-Oregon State second varsity eight race was close throughout the 2,000-meter course. The wind on the water caused the boats to move out of position with oar blades from each crew colliding in the final 100 meters of the race. After a long discussion by race officials, it was determined that the two crews will re-row tomorrow at 11:20 a.m.
Along with the second varsity eight re-row against Oregon State, the Cardinal will race No. 2 Washington during Saturday's morning session. Stanford and UW will face off in the novice eight at 9 a.m., the second varsity eight at 9:40 a.m. and the varsity eight at 11 a.m.
Stanford will meet Hobart in the afternoon with the second varsity eight racing at 1:30 p.m. and the varsity eight racing at 1:50 p.m. The Cardinal will close the regatta against Santa Clara with the third varsity eight of Stanford meeting the freshman eight of Santa Clara at 2:30 p.m.
