PRINCETON, N.J. – In a rare dual race during the regular season, the top-ranked Stanford lightweight rowing program defeated No. 4 Princeton Saturday morning on Lake Carnegie in New Jersey to take the Class of 2015 Cup.
The Cardinal varsity eight won by open water over the Tigers, completing the Lake Carnegie course in 6:13.8. Princeton finished the dual race in 6:22.6.
Stanford and Princeton each fielded a pair of varsity fours in the other race. The Cardinal's two entries placed first and second, completing the course in 7:17.2 and 7:26.4. Princeton's two entries recorded times of 7:28.1 and 7:41.5.
Saturday was the first of a series of duals between Stanford and Princeton over the next couple of year, with the winner of the varsity eight race claiming the Class of 2015 Cup.
The dual was a homecoming for Stanford lightweight rowing head coach Kate Bertko, who rowed for Princeton. Bertko guided the Tigers to the 2006 NCAA Championship, rowing in the varsity eight.
The Princeton dual was the final regatta of the regular season. The Cardinal will compete in the Pacific Coast Rowing Championships next Saturday (May 13) at Lake Natoma near Sacramento, California.
Stanford will then look to defend its title in the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) Championships June 2-4 at the Lake Natoma course.
