STANFORD, Calif. – Junior
Colton Hock set the school's single season saves record as he closed out No. 10 Stanford's 4-0 win over San Francisco at Sunken Diamond on Tuesday night.
Â
"I have been very fortunate," Hock said of the record. "If the team doesn't put up runs and pitch well, then I don't have that opportunity. I've been very fortunate to be the guy at the end of it."Â
Â
Hock recorded the last four outs for his 14th save of the year. That broke a standard originally set 30 seasons ago by Steve Chitren (1987), and then matched by Jeff Bruksch in 2000. Hock also moved into a tie for 10th in Pac-12 history with his 23rd career save, which is second-most at Stanford behind Chitren's 26.
Â
Hock was set up by freshman starter
Erik Miller, who threw six scoreless innings, senior
Jack Klein, who broke a scoreless tie in the sixth, and sophomore
Duke Kinamon, who gave the Cardinal cushion with a three-run blast in the seventh inning.
Â
Stanford (31-13) took a 1-0 lead in the sixth. Freshman
Daniel Bakst doubled and Klein pushed a two-out single through right side to bring him home.
Â
An inning later, Kinamon provided some insurance.
Nico Hoerner singled with one out and Bakst drew a 10-pitch walk to set the table. Kinamon fell behind 0-2 in the count, and then crushed a pitch into the Sunken Diamond trees in left center.
Â
Meanwhile, Miller (3-1) allowed just two hits and struck out two in his longest outing since March 25. The Dons only got one runner into scoring position in Miller's six innings of work.
Â
Senior
Tyler Thorne allowed just two hits 1.2 innings. However, the Dons (24-26) loaded the bases to bring the tying run to the plate in the eighth. Hock entered and a quick strikeout ended the inning. The Dons got a one-out double in the ninth, but a ground out and strikeout locked up the school record and Stanford's fourth shutout of the year.
Â
NUMBERS…
Kinamon finished 2-for-4 with three RBI, while
Matt Winaker went 2-for-3 with two walks. Bakst finished 1-for-3 with two runs and a walk as Stanford out-hit San Francisco, 7-5. Hock allowed just one hit and struck out two in 1.1 innings.
