STANFORD, Calif. - No. 16 Stanford will be making its 38th NCAA Tournament appearance when it hosts first and second round competition Friday and Saturday at Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
The Cardinal (16-8, 4-3 Pac-12), seeded 16th overall in the postseason draw, hosts Idaho (16-7, 9-2 Big Sky) at 2 p.m. PT on Friday, May 12, in the first round. No. 17 Michigan (22-6, 10-2 Big Ten) will face Valparaiso (23-3, 7-0 Horizon League) earlier that day at 11 a.m. The winners meet in the second round on Saturday, May 13, at 4 p.m.
Series History:
Idaho - The Vandals will travel to Stanford for the first time in program history to take on the Cardinal Friday. The Big Sky Champions claimed their second crown in three years with a 16-7 and 9-2 record this season.
Michigan - The Wolverines head to The Farm with Stanford holding an overall record of 5-0, though the last meeting came in 2010 in Ann Arbor resulting in a 5-2 Cardinal win. This season, Michigan finished second to No. 2 Ohio State in the Big Ten Championships while compiling wins over No. 15 Kentucky, No. 19 Columbia, No. 21 Northwestern, No. 25 Arkansas and No. 25 Illinois.
Valparaiso - The Crusaders are another new face to Stanford as they travel west with a 23-3 and impressive 7-0 record in conference action after repeating as the Horizon League Champions this year.
Don't Call it a Comeback:
Ranked between No. 15-44 throughout the season, the Cardinal rallied to claim a five-match win streak including a benchmark 4-1 win over No. 5 USC. In addition, Stanford advanced to the Pac-12 semifinal match for the third straight year. Seven-of-eight of the Cardinal's losses have come against ranked opponents.
Wily D-Willy:
Junior David Wilczynski has amassed a phenomenal campaign this season - he's posted singles win streaks of six and seven to compile a 16-3 duals record.
In doubles action, he's teamed up with Brandon Sutter to roll to a 15-4 duals record while putting up two five-match streaks and holding a current two-match streak.
On the year Wilczynski has been honored twice by the Pac-12 as Player of the Week.
NCAA History:
The Cardinal owns a storied history in collegiate tennis - all-time Stanford is 107-22 in the NCAA Tournament. The Cardinal has won 17 NCAA championships, including 15 since the NCAA Tournament went to its present format in 1977. The most recent crown came back in 2000, when Stanford blanked VCU 4-0.
Since the NCAA changed to its present format the Cardinal has reached the round of 16 29 times.
Taube Family Tennis Stadium will play host to NCAA first and second round competition on May 12-14, also serving as a host site on the women's side. All seats are general admission.
