Fox, Butler Advance to Semis

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Paul Fox and Nathan Butler have advanced to the semifinals of the Southern Scuffle, presented by Compound Sportswear, Monday at McKenzie Arena.

Fox tallied three decisions at 157 pounds to reach the semifinals, where he will meet No. 1 Jason Nolf of Penn State on Tuesday morning. The redshirt junior avenged a loss to No. 20 Alex Mossing of Air Force that he suffered at the Reno Tournament of Champions on Dec. 17 with a 6-1 decision in the quarterfinals. Fox is now 10-3 on the season.

Butler, ranked 11th nationally at heavyweight, was also 3-0 on the day. After a 6-0 decision against Drexel's Vincenzo Pelusi in the opening round, the fifth-year senior secured a fall in 1:00 over Navy's Austin Faunce in the Round of 16. Butler then took out No. 12 Jordan Wood of Lehigh, 4-2, in the second sudden victory period of the quarterfinals. He moves to 14-4 on the year and will take on NC State's Mike Boykin in the semifinals on Tuesday.

Sophomore Gabriel Townsell and redshirt senior Keaton Subjeck also wrestled in the quarterfinals for the Cardinal. Townsell, who has moved back down to 125 pounds, trailed No. 16 Louie Hayes of Virginia 4-3 late in the third period. Townsell managed to escape with just three seconds left in regulation to force overtime, where Hayes registered a takedown to end it. Townsell will face Chattanooga's Fabian Guitierrez on Tuesday in the consolation bracket.

Subjeck, who is ranked No. 12 at 174 pounds, came up short in a 10-5 decision to eighth-ranked Jadaen Bernstein of Navy in the quarterfinals. He stands at 14-4 on the season and will wrestle Utah Valley's Kimball Bastian on Tuesday in the consolation bracket.

True freshman Judah Duhm is also still alive in the consolation bracket at 184 pounds for the Cardinal. He went 3-1 on the opening day of the tournament and will take on Virginia Tech's Stan Smeltzer on Tuesday morning.

Action on Tuesday begins at 7 a.m. PT on Flowrestling. Stanford is currently in ninth place as a team with 38.5 points.
