CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Four Cardinal placed in the top 8 as Stanford finished ninth (68 points) as a team at the Southern Scuffle, presented by Compound Sportswear, Tuesday, at McKenzie Arena.
Redshirt junior Paul Fox and redshirt senior Nathan Butler finished third at 157 and 285 pounds, respectively. Redshirt senior Keaton Subjeck was fifth at 174 pounds, while sophomore Gabriel Townsell took seventh at 125 pounds.
After falling to top-ranked Jason Nolf in the semifinals, Fox bounced back with a 9-6 decision over Navy's Zack Davis to reach the the third-place bout, where he received a win by medical forfeit over No. 17 Coleman Hammond of CSU Bakersfield. Fox is now 12-4 on the season.
Butler, ranked No. 11 in the nation, also dropped his semifinal match, a 3-1 decision to NC State's Mike Boykin. The Leavenworth, Kansas native stormed back with a fall over 13th-ranked Thomas Haines of Lock Haven in just 12 seconds to advance to the third-place bout. There, he knocked-off No. 3 Nick Nevills of Penn State, 2-0. Butler is now 16-5 on the year and is five wins away from becoming just the 10th Cardinal to register 100 career victories.
Subjeck, who is 12th nationally, finished the tournament 5-2, including a fall over Duke's Matt Finesilver in 41 seconds and a medical forfeit victory against No. 8 Jadaen Bernstein of Navy in the fifth-place bout. Subjeck moves to 17-5 on the season.
Townsell finished the tournament 4-2 overall, edging George Mason's Ibrahim Bunduka, 3-2, in the seventh-place bout. The sophomore, who has moved back down to 125 pounds, is 12-9 on the year.
Stanford returns to dual action on Sunday as it hosts Penn at 3 p.m. in Burnham Pavilion. The Quakers will also take on Cal Poly at Noon. Admission is free.
