STANFORD, Calif. – The Stanford wrestling team returns to dual action on Sunday as it hosts Penn at 3 p.m. in Burnham Pavilion. Admission is free.
Stanford (2-2, 1-0 Pac-12) is coming off a ninth-place finish as a team at the Southern Scuffle. Four Cardinal placed in the top 8 - 157-pounder Paul Fox (3rd), 285-pounder Nathan Butler (3rd), 174-pounder Keaton Subjeck (5th) and 125-pounder Gabriel Townsell (7th). Stanford has three wrestlers in the top 20 in the InterMat rankings - Butler is No. 11 at 285 pounds, Subjeck checks in at No. 12 at 174 pounds and redshirt freshman Nathan Traxler is 16th at 197 pounds.
Penn (3-2) will also face Cal Poly (0-2) on The Farm on Sunday, beginning at 12 p.m. in Burnham Pavilion. The Quakers recently recorded its best team finish at Midlands, taking ninth. Senior Frank Mattiace, who is ranked 13th nationally, was the runner-up at 197 pounds, while 19th-ranked Joe Heyob was fifth at 184 pounds and May Bethea took sixth at 165 pounds.
Cal Poly is 0-2 in duals this season, coming up short on Thursday at Fresno State (29-13). Stanford will travel to San Luis Obispo to face the Mustangs in a Pac-12 dual on Jan. 26.
Stanford will hit the road next week, traveling to the East coast to face Brown and Harvard on Jan. 13.
