STANFORD, Calif. - No. 1 Stanford visits No. 2 Vanderbilt this weekend in an early-season showdown that also represents the latest chapter of a budding rivalry.
Since 2015, Stanford and Vanderbilt have hooked up four times, with the Cardinal prevailing in three of those meetings. The matches have usually been competitive, with the lone exception being Vanderbilt's 4-1 victory in Nashville two years ago during the regular season.
Perhaps Stanford's most memorable win came during its 2016 NCAA title run, in which the Cardinal defeated the Commodores 4-2 in the semifinals. Stanford's other two victories occurred during the regular season in 2015 and 2017.
Both programs have been annual NCAA title contenders over that same stretch, adding another level of intrigue to Saturday's match. The reward is an early inside track to the winner, although both Stanford and Vanderbilt will have many more opportunities to post signature wins thanks to challenging conference schedules in the Pac-12 and SEC, respectively.
Stanford (1-0) easily cruised past San Jose State 6-1 last weekend, opening its season on the road for the first time since 2001.
Vanderbilt (2-0) will host No. 16 Baylor on Friday before welcoming the Cardinal 24 hours later.
The Cardinal's home opener is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 9, against Saint Mary's at 1:30 p.m. PT.
