AMES, Iowa – In his first individual indoor race in a Stanford uniform, junior Grant Fisher took second in the 3,000 meters at the Iowa State Classic on Friday night with the second-fastest time in school history.

Fisher ran 7:48.56, placing him No. 2 on Stanford's all-time indoor performers' list with the third-fastest time in NCAA Division I this year. Only Chris Derrick's 7:46.81 during a 2012 NCAA runner-up performance is faster in Stanford history.

Fisher broke his personal record of 7:50.06, achieved during a victory at the Husky Classic while running unattached as a freshman.

In this race, Fisher was third at 2,000, when the second of two rabbits left the track. Sandwiched  for most of the final kilometer between Northern Arizona runners Matthew Baxter in front and Andy Trouard in third, Fisher bolted into the lead with just over a lap to go on the 300-meter flat oval.

Trouard tried to pass on the backstretch, but Fisher held him off. As they came off the final turn, Trouard got a step on the outside and maintained the lead to the line. Still, Fisher's position in the nation's top 16, which ensures a berth in the NCAA Championships March 9-10 in College Station, Texas, seems strong. The qualifying window continues through the conference championship meets Feb. 23-24.

In the men's 5,000, Steven Fahy was ninth in 13:44.82, a 16-second improvement on his lifetime best for the distance indoors or outdoors. Fahy, a steeplechaser by trade, moved into the Stanford indoor Top 10 in the No. 8 spot.

In the earlier heat, redshirt freshman Alek Parsons also broke 14 minutes for the first, squeezing in at 13:58.87 for seventh, a lifetime best by 11 seconds. With the additions of Fahy and Parsons, the number of sub-14ers on Stanford's team balloons to six.
