PALOS VERDES ESTATES, Calif. – Idle since Nov. 1, the fifth-ranked Stanford women's golf team shook off the rust Sunday in the first round of the 18-team Northrop Grumann Challenge at Palos Verdes Golf Club.
The Cardinal combined for an 11-over par score of 295 on the par-71 course and is tied for sixth with USC in the 54-hole tournament. Arizona and Arizona State share the lead at 1-over 285.
As was the case most of the fall, sophomore Andrea Lee led the way for Stanford by shooting an even-par 71, carding three birdies and two bogeys on the 6,017-yard layout. She is tied for eighth, three strokes behind Olivia Mehaffey of Arizona State, who aced the 200-yard par-3 second hole and shot 68.
Cardinal freshman Mika Liu contributed a 1-over 72 and is tied for 14th. She played the back nine in 1-under 35.
Also competing for Stanford are senior Shannon Aubert and sophomore Albane Valenzuela, who shot 76, and sophomore Ziyi Wang (80).
Ohio State is hosting the event for the 23rd year, and the strong field includes 11 of the top 20 schools in the country.
The second round will be contested Monday, followed by the final round on Tuesday. The Cardinal tees off at 9:22 a.m. on the 10th hole with Florida, USC and Northwestern.
