ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.
– The team of Julian Body, Frank Kurtz, Louis Stenmark, and Gabriel Navarro set a Stanford indoor record in the 4x400-meter relay on Saturday at the Don Kirby Collegiate Invitational.

Stanford ran clocked 3:09.38 on the Albuquerque Convention Center's 200-meter banked track to flnish a close second to Washington in 3:09.24. The time broke the mark of 3:09.80 from a runner-up finish at the 2017 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships on an oversized track at Washington. That team was Kurtz, Harrison Williams, Isaiah Brandt-Sims, and Jackson Shumway.

The splits on Saturday were: Body in 47.2, Kurtz in 46.5, Stenmark in 47.3, and Navarro in 48.3.

Stenmark and Navarro are freshmen, Body is a sophomore, and Kurtz is a redshirt junior. The team should be even stronger outdoors when Williams, a decathlete with an open 400 best of 46.66, will rejoin the team after redshirting this indoor season. Brandt-Sims, part of Stanford's 2016 Pac-12 championship 4x400 team, is in the mix as well.

In the women's 4x400, Stanford's team of Carolyn Wilson, Gaby Gayles, Ashlan Best, and Olivia Baker ran 3:34.73, the third-fastest time in school indoor history. The Cardinal placed second in the race to Oregon in 3:30.18.

"I'm incredibly excited not just for where this group is at, but where it is heading, both in the short and the long term," said Stanford sprints coach Gabe Sanders. "It's still so early in the calendar year to be putting down efforts like this, knowing there's even more in the tank."

Baker and Gayles have been part of all three of Stanford's fastest indoor relays. Wilson and Best are freshmen and Gayles are Baker are both seniors. The splits went like this: Wilson in 53.7, Gayles in 53.9, Best in 54.4, and Baker in 52.7.

"Be a Card, do your job," Sanders said. "Doesn't matter who's on the line, it's about representing yourself, your teammates, your program, and The Farm to the nth degree. I'd say, job well done today."
