SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Sophomore Albane Valenzuela opened the Bruin Wave Invitational with an even-par 72 Monday and followed with second-round 73 to lead the fourth-place Stanford women's golf team. Valenzuela is second in the medalist race heading into the final day of competition.
Stanford teamed for a first-round 15-over 303, three shots behind clubhouse leader USC. San Diego State was second at 14-over.
Through 36 holes, USC held on to the team lead at 22-over. UCLA (+27) was second, San Diego State (+34) placed third and Stanford (+36) took fourth.
UCLA's Lilia Vu leads all players at 4-under.
Valenzuela, whose first round started on the second hole of the San Luis Obispo Country Club, overcame consecutive bogeys on Nos. 6-7 with birdies on Nos. 10-11. After a bogey on the par-4 12th, Valenzuela parred the next six holes before finishing with a birdie on the par-5, 558-yard first hole.
She played the back nine of her second circuit at even-par.
Joining Valenzuela in the top-20 was Andrea Lee, who is tied for 17th at 9-over. Lee used two first-round birdies on the front nine to get to 1-over, and her lone bogey on the back half came on the par-3 14th. Lee added a second-round 79.
Mika Liu (+13) is 30th, matching the output of Ziyi Wang (+13). Shannon Aubert (+19) is 60th.
Kelsey Zeng, competing as an individual, secured an 22-over for 72nd.
