STANFORD, Calif. – Katie Dudley tied a career-high with five goals and the No. 1 Cardinal rolled to a 16-4 win over No. 8 Pacific on the first day of the Stanford Invitational.
Dudley did all of her damage in the first two quarters and Stanford (5-0) erupted for 11 first-half goals to go up by eight at intermission, 11-3. The senior's five-goal outburst matched her total from a game at UC Santa Barbara during her sophomore season on March 22, 2016.
Dudley scored the game's first two goals within the opening minute before Pacific got on the board when Brooke Contreras rattled the cage at 6:47. Shannon Cleary pushed the lead to 3-1 at 3:54 and the Tigers' Rachel Krieger again pulled them back within a score with just over a minute remaining in the opening period before the Cardinal kicked into high gear.
Up 3-2 late in the first, Stanford would go on an eight-goal run and hold Pacific scoreless for seven minutes and 57 seconds to take control.
Aria Fischer started the spurt with a score at the 46-second mark of the first quarter. As she did in the first, Dudley got Stanford going in the second, connecting for the Cardinal's first three goals of the frame. She slipped the ball past Alexis Hollinrake at 7:44 and 6:09 and then converted in the 6-on-5 one minute later.
Madison Berggren put home the next two for Stanford (4:47 and 4:02) and then it was Makenzie Fischer's turn. Fischer rattled the cage with 3:23 and 2:27 on the clock to make it 11-2 Cardinal. Pacific's Kamryn Lucero put an end to the run when she scored with 1:12 remaining in the half.
Shannon Cleary (4:57) and Hannah Shabb (1:46) extended Stanford's advantage to 10 with a pair of third-quarter goals until UOP found its final score of the game late in the period from Kennedy Watson (1:25).
Cassy Wiley (6:46), Kat Klass (5:12) and Bella Baldridge (2:54) put three more up for Stanford in the fourth and the Cardinal won its fifth consecutive game by double digits to start the season.
Julia Hermann made nine saves in the first three quarters. Emalia Eichelberger came on in the fourth and made one stop.
Stanford, which fell 11-9 in an exhibition with China early Saturday morning, continues its tournament tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. against No. 10 Long Beach State and will play and yet-to-be determined opponent in the afternoon.
