STANFORD, Calif. - Bradford M. Freeman Director of Football David Shaw announced Wednesday that three student-athletes will continue their academic and athletic careers at Stanford.
Outside linebacker Caleb Kelly (Hapeville Charter/Fairburn, Ga.), quarterback Tanner McKee (Centennial/Corona, Calif.) and inside linebacker Jacob Mangum-Farrar (Kempner/Sugar Land, Texas) officially submitted their National Letter of Intent to Stanford University.
"Our 2018 class has many layers," Shaw said. "We have two great future quarterbacks with Jack West coming in this summer and Tanner McKee coming to Stanford in 2020. Athleticism and versatility are the keys for our other offensive signees, both on the offense line and in the skill positions.
"Defensively, when you see the guys that we've added to our front seven all stand together, you see the size, length and athleticism we need to be the kind of attacking defense we want to be.
"With all of the spread passing teams we face, we are excited to add speed and length to our defensive backfield."
The trio joins 11 student-athletes who signed a National Letter of Intent in December. Four more officially confirmed their enrollment at Stanford in December.
Wide receiver Simi Fehoko (Brighton/Sandy, Utah) and outside linebacker Tangaloa Kaufusi (East/Salt Lake City, Utah), who signed in 2016 before their LDS church missions, are also confirmed to join the incoming class this fall.
Stanford's class is ranked 20th nationally by PrepStar. Six signees are ESPN300 recruits and 10 are prep All-Americans. Ten of the 14 student-athletes who signed a National Letter of Intent were rated as four-star recruits.
McKee, a consensus four-star recruit, was tabbed the nation's third-best pro-style quarterback and California's fifth-best overall recruit by 247Sports. He posted 2,150 yards passing and 23 touchdowns, 675 yards rushing and 11 touchdowns as a senior. McKee will serve a two-year LDS mission before enrolling at Stanford.
Mangum-Farrar will help fill the void left by departing fifth-year senior Kevin Palma at inside linebacker. He was a four-star recruit and Texas' 46th-best prospect by 247Sports.
Kelly, a Georgia product, will add depth to the Cardinal's outside linebacker corps. He was a consensus top-50 recruit nationally at his position while totaling 55 tackles and 15.5 sacks as a senior. Kelly led Hapeville Charter to the 2017 state title.
Stanford finished the 2017 season with a 9-5 record, and six of those wins came at Stanford Stadium.
The 2018 campaign will be the eighth for Bradford M. Freeman Director of Football David Shaw. He has an overall record of 73-22 with three Pac-12 titles and two wins in the Rose Bowl. Stanford won at least 11 games four times and had at least 10 wins five times under Shaw, while also going to a bowl game every season in which he has been the head coach. Shaw has been named Pac-12 Coach of the Year four times and AFCA Regional Coach of the Year three times.
