Card Splits on Opening Day

TEMPE, Ariz. – Maddy Dwyer collected a complete-game shutout in her collegiate debut Thursday as the Cardinal opened its season with a doubleheader split, falling to No. 19 BYU 10-1 (6) before blanking SDSU 4-0.

The Cardinal (1-1) was unable to sustain a stellar defensive outing in the season opener against No. 19 BYU (1-0) as Stanford hung tough against the Cougars until the sixth.

Carolyn Lee was given the start, where the junior produced over five innings of lights-out work while striking out six and no-hitting the BYU offense until the fifth inning.

The infield stepped up as well with some glove work by Teaghan Cowles and Whitney Burks, who also produced on offense going 1-for-2 with an RBI to drive in the Cardinal's first run of the year.

The Cougar offense clicked into place pouncing on Stanford's pitching in the fifth and sixth inning to post four home runs in rapid-succession to close the game out after in six.

In the latter game of Thursday's double header, Stanford's Maddy Dwyer and the Cardinal defense came out in a complete-team effort to dominate San Diego State.

Montana Dixon had a career day at the plate with two doubles with an RBI and a run scored while gunning out an Aztec runner at second.

Lauren Frost also went 2-for-3 at the plate with a team-leading two RBIs as the Cardinal remained in control from start to finish.

The Cardinal returns to action tomorrow to face Seattle University at Tempe Sports Complex with a start time of 4 p.m. PT.
