Game 1: Box Score | Game 2: Box Score
STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford used a walk-off single by Arden Pettit to defeat CSU Bakersfield and Kiana Pancino hurled a six-hit shutout against Wagner, as the Cardinal posted a two-game sweep to open the Stanford Easton Classic at Boyd & Jill Smith Family Stadium.
The Cardinal (15-8) improved to 5-1 at home while allowing only nine hits through 12 innings of action on Friday, as its 4-0 win over Wagner (3-8) was followed by a five-inning, 8-0 blanking of the Roadrunners (1-14).
Stanford is only four wins shy of last season's total, and has won 13 of its past 17 outings after starting the season 2-4.
Pancino (6-2) fanned five in her winning effort to start the day against Wagner, and was aided by eight Cardinal hits. Teaghan Cowles, Hannah Howell and Molly Fowkes had two hits apiece. The trio each added two more in the nightcap against CSU Bakersfield, when the Cardinal out-hit the visitors, 12-3.
The latter victory was earned in the circle by Maddy Dwyer, who improved to 9-5 after allowing three hits and fanning four in 4.0 innings. Carolyn Lee punched out a pair in the final stanza against CSU Bakersfield.
Stanford used a three-run fourth inning to help distance itself from Wagner. Howell singled to left, Fowkes singled to right, and Pettit's RBI infield single put the Cardinal on the board. Lauren Frost drove in the Cardinal's second run, and Cowles' one-bagger up the middle made it 3-0.
Fowkes tallied an RBI with a fifth-inning single that scored Kristina Inouye from third.
Cowles nabbed her 12th stolen base in as many attempts on the season.
In the second game, Stanford built an insurmountable lead before CSU Bakersfield could blink.
Two runs came in the opening stanza. Five more came in the second, including two-RBI smacks by both Howell and Inouye.
The bottom of the fifth started with Howell's single through the left side, followed by a two-out walk drawn by Carmina Nicolas. Pettit sent a 1-0 delivery to right field, plating the game-winning run.
Stanford had little trouble getting on base, totaling 20 hits in the two games but stranded as many runners on base.
The Cardinal has four games remaining in the Stanford Easton Classic, starting with Saturday's double-dip against Wagner (noon PT) and CSU Bakersfield (2:30 p.m.). Live video and stats will be available at GoStanford.com.
