Two More Wins

STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford softball remained unbeaten in the Easton Classic with a doubleheader sweep of Wagner, 8-0, and CSU Bakersfield, 8-3, on Saturday afternoon at Smith Family Stadium.

Stanford (17-8) is 4-0 in its home tournament and has matched its longest winning streak of the season with four straight wins. The Cardinal is two wins away from matching last year's win total. 

In the doubleheader sweep, sophomore Kristina Inouye was 3-for-5 with three RBI, sophomore Teaghan Cowles was 3-for-6 with four RBI and freshman Maddy Dwyer earned a win and a save with eight scoreless innings.Game 1Nine different Cardinal had a hit, and Dwyer allowed just one base runner in the five-inning win over Wagner, 8-0.

Dwyer (10-5) struck out five and faced the minimum 15 hitters. Wagner got a single to lead off the third, but two batters later, sophomore catcher Montana Dixon picked the runner off first. That was the only player to reach for the Seahawks.

Meanwhile, Inouye got the scoring started in the second with a solo blast that nearly hit the new scoreboard in left field.

Stanford blew the game open with five runs in the fourth. Fowkes, who went 2-for-2, knocked in two runs with a double down the left field line. Arden Pettit singled home another run, and Cowles laced a triple into right center that scored Lauren Wegner and Maya Jackson.

The Cardinal ended it early with a pair of runs in the fifth. Victoria Molina tripled off the wall in center and scored when Wegner pushed one through the left side.

Lauren Frost had the walk off. She lined one into left and Pettit raced home to lock up Stanford's third straight shutout.

Inouye was 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI, while Wegner went 2-for-2 with a run and RBI. Molina finished 1-for-1 with two runs after entering as a pinch runner in the fourth.

 

Game 2CSU Bakersfield (1-15) loaded the bases against Kiana Pancino in the first. Sophomore Nikki Bauer entered and allowed just one run to cross.
Stanford got the run back and added another in the home half. Whitney Burks doubled home Dixon, and Fowkes added the go-ahead sacrifice fly.

The Cardinal added two more in the fourth. Three straight singles by Hannah Howell, Burks and Inouye gave Stanford a 4-1 advantage.

Bauer (1-0) earned her first win of the season with just four hits and two runs allowed in four innings of work. She left with a one-run lead in the fifth, and Dwyer earned her third save of the year with three innings of one-hit ball.

The Cardinal added four insurance runs in the fifth. Cowles, who went 2-for-3 with two doubles, brought home two when she lined one into the gap in left center. Burks earned an RBI when she was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Inouye walked in another run for the final margin.Up NextStanford returns to action on Sunday with another doubleheader against Wagner and CSU Bakersfield. First pitch is at 11 a.m. at Jill and Boyd Smith Family Stadium. The Cardinal then has a week off before it opens Pac-12 play at Utah, March 24-26.
