Fox, Butler Move On

CLEVELAND - Paul Fox picked up two wins Friday morning and joins Nathan Butler as the remaining two Cardinal still in the NCAA Championships at Quicken Loans Arena.

Fox won two matches Friday morning at 157 pounds to remain alive in the consolation brackets. He posted a 10-4 decision over Lehigh's Ian Brown and then held off Minnesota's Jake Short, 10-7. Fox is now 23-8 this season and will face No. 8 seed Tyler Berger of Nebraska in the Round of 12 Friday night for a chance to become a two-time All-American.

Butler dropped his quarterfinal match to No. 2 seed Adam Coon of Michigan, 7-0. He falls into the heavyweight consolation bracket and will meet No. 5 seed Sam Stoll of Iowa in the Round of 12 for the a spot on the podium. 

Redshirt freshman Nathan Traxler defeated No. 12 seed Stephen Loiseau of Drexel, 9-4, in his first match on Friday. The 197-pounder then found himself in a battle with No. 14 seed Cash Wilcke of Iowa. Tied 1-1 after regulation, the match went the distance. Wilcke earned an escape on his second set of tiebreakers and had 14 seconds of riding time accrued. Traxler chose neutral, but was unable to score before Wilcke notched the winning takedown to end it, 5-2. Traxler ends his rookie campaign with a 19-12 overall record.

Fifth-year senior Keaton Subjeck fell 7-4 to Army's Ben Harvey in the consolation bracket at 174 pounds. Subjeck closes out his time on The Farm with an 89-39 career record and tied for seventh on Stanford's career pins list at 21.

Sophomore Gabriel Townsell also had his tournament come to an end Friday morning with a 4-1 loss to Michigan's Drew Mattin at 125 pounds. Townsell finishes his second season on The Farm 20-15 overall.

Friday's evening session will begin at 5 p.m. PT on ESPN. All six mats will be available online on the WatchESPN app.
