Cardinal Fall in Cleveland

CLEVELAND - Paul Fox and Nathan Butler drop their Round of 12 matches and end Stanford's run at the NCAA Championships, Friday, at Quicken Loans Arena.

Fox fell short of becoming a two-time All-American as he dropped a 6-3 decision to No. 8 seed Tyler Berger of Nebraska in the Round of 12. Fox, an All-American with a seventh-place finish in 2017, scored the first takedown of the match and led 2-1 after one. He chose neutral to start the second, but Berger scored two takedowns in the period to take the lead, 5-3. Berger added an escape to start the third and held off several shots by Fox to hold on for the win.

Fox finishes his third season on The Farm with a 23-9 overall record and is 74-31 for his career.

Butler, seeded seventh, dropped a 15-3 major decision to No. 5 seed Sam Stoll of Iowa. He ends his career as just the 10th Cardinal wrestler to record 100 wins, finishing 105-38.

Stanford qualified six wrestlers to the championships - tied for the second-most in program history.
