Hornet Invitational Results18 Opens in a new window

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – In her collegiate debut, Stanford freshman Virginia Miller won the javelin on the competition's final throw Saturday as Stanford opened the outdoor track and field season at the Hornet Invitational.

Miller was among several freshmen who helped highlight Stanford's performances. Ashlan Best swept the women's short sprints and Will Kingsfield broke into Stanford's all-time top-10 in the men's javelin while placing second to teammate Trevor Danielson.

Miller threw 162-8 (49.59 meters) to move to No. 7 on Stanford's top-10 list. It made Miller the fifth-farthest freshman ever at Stanford and was a 21-foot improvement over her personal best entering the day.

Miller got off a 158-3 (48.23m) on the first throw, which led the competition until the sixth and final round when the second-to-last thrower, Channing Wilson, a 2016 U.S. Olympic trials competitor, threw 160-0 (48.76m) to pull ahead. But the last thrower was Miller, and that's when she pulled off a 4-foot personal best to win.

By the way, Miller, from Vashon Island, Washington, is the daughter of former high school national javelin record holder Foss Miller, who also would hold Washington State's school record.

Best, the 2017 Pan Am Under-20 200 champion for Canada, won her specialty in 24.28, edging Fresno Pacific's Brie Courseault by 0.03. Earlier, Best set her personal best in the 100, winning in 11.90. During the indoor season, Best made her mark as a member of Stanford's winning 4x400 relay team at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships.

Danielson won the javelin in 217-1 (66.18m), with Kingsfield, a redshirt freshman, next at 200-2 (61.02m), placing him No. 10 on Stanford's all-time performance list.

Besides Kingsfield and Miller, there was one other top-10 addition, pole vaulter Nicole Summersett. She moved into a tie at No. 10 on the list with a jump of 12-9 ½ (3.90m). That mark was good for second to teammate Kaitlyn Merritt, who cleared 13-1 ½ (4.00m).
