FULLERTON, Calif. – Freshman Maddy Dwyer tossed a three-hitter to lead Stanford softball to a 4-0 win over Charlotte in its tournament opener at the Judi Garman Classic on Thursday night.
Dwyer struck out five, walked just one and faced the minimum in five of seven innings. Charlotte (6-9) had just one base runner reach second base.
Stanford (11-7), which won for the fifth time in six games, struck first in the second. Redshirt junior Whitney Burks doubled to lead off the inning and scored on a wild pitch. Kristina Inouye, who drew a walk, worked her way home on a bunt, wild pitch, and two-out single to right from Lauren Wegner.
The Cardinal added one in the third for a 3-0 advantage. Teaghan Cowles led off with a single to left, stole second, and scored on a single to center by Inouye.
Another insurance run came across in the fifth. Once again, Cowles singled and stole second. She went to third on an overthrow and scored on a sacrifice fly by Montana Dixon.
Notables:
• Stanford earned its fifth shutout of the year. Dwyer has thrown three complete-game shutouts, Kiana Pancino had a no-hitter against Army, and the two split a shutout against Weber State.
