STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford men's rowing begins the season Saturday at the San Diego Crew Classic on Mission Bay.
"The San Diego Crew Classic represents our first regatta of the season," said head coach Craig Amerkhanian. "We are just completing final exams and we're ready to release some energy. I look forward to the results as we race against excellent competition."
The two-day regatta is annually regarded as one of the top events nationwide in the spring season. Racing begins Saturday morning and runs through Sunday afternoon. Fans can follow the racing this weekend at the event's website for up-to-the-minute results.
BRONZE FINISH FOR VARSITY EIGHT LAST SEASON AT CREW CLASSIC
Last year, Stanford placed two of its three entries in the top three during the Grand Finals of the San Diego Crew Classic on Mission Bay. The Cardinal varsity eight placed third in the Grand Final of the Copley Cup. Stanford raced down the course in 5:50.02 to finish behind first-place California (5:35.50) and second-place Yale (5:39.01).
The novice eight placed second in the Derek Guelker Cup Grand Final with an open-water advantage over third place Orange Coast. The Cardinal recorded a time of 6:12.71, ahead of Orange Coast's 6:19.44.
PAC-12 NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR
Sophomore Brennan Wertz was named the Pac-12 Conference Men's Rowing Newcomer of the Year. The Cardinal had two representatives on the All-Pac-12 Team, as junior Jovanni Stefani joined Wertz on the conference's 14-man all-star team.

After this weekend's action, Stanford will head to Seattle to race Washington on Saturday, Apr. 7, then return home to host the Stanford Invitational at Redwood Shores on Apr. 14 and 15.
