Fencers Show Well

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Freshman Madeline Liao finished 17th and junior Carly Weber-Levine placed 19th in the NCAA Collegiate Fencing Championships on Friday at Penn State University.
 
Competing in foil, Liao won eight of 23 bouts on Thursday and Friday to conclude at -9.
 
Qualifying for the third consecutive year, Weber-Levine claimed six of 23 bouts in sabre and finished at -24. She captured 11th last year and took 22nd in 20016.
 
 NCAA titles were captured by Maia Chamberlain of Princeton in sabre, Iman Blow of Columbia/Barnard in foil and Catherine Nixon of Princeton in epee.
 
Notre Dame leads after the women's competition with total of 95 points, while Stanford is 16th with 14.
 
The men's competition gets underway Saturday at 9 a.m. ET, with five Cardinal fencers in action. Jeffrey Dalli and Sean Strong will participate in sabre, Lucas Orts in foil, and Robin Cheong and Royce Wang in epee.
 
The championship ends Sunday, when a combined men's and women's team champion will be crowned.
