Record Setting Night

BERKELEY, Calif. - Junior Julia Massaro set two school records en route to a 17-7 win for No. 13 Stanford over rival Cal in the lacrosse regular season finale on Friday night at Memorial Stadium.

Stanford finished the regular season at 13-4 overall, and 8-2 in the first-ever Pac-12 Conference season. The Cardinal earned a first round bye and the No. 2 seed at the Pac-12 Tournament, April 26-29 in Boulder, Colo.

Massaro set the school single-game record with 11 draw controls. In doing so, she also surpassed the school single-season record for draw controls. Kelly Myers was the only other Cardinal with double-digit draw controls in a game as she held the previous record with 10 against Vanderbilt on March 8, 2015.

Meanwhile, Massaro needed just three draw controls to surpass Lucy Dikeou's 64 draw controls from 2015, and became the first Cardinal to surpass 70 in a season with 74 after Friday's record-setting performance.

Senior Kelsey Murray had a hat trick, while Ali Baiocco, Areta Buness, Maggie Nick, Galen Lew, Jacie  Lemos and Daniella McMahon each scored twice for the Cardinal.

The Cardinal scored four of the first five goals and never trailed. Lemos scored near the midway point of the first half to give Stanford a 6-2 lead.

Cal (6-11, 2-8 Pac-12) scored to make it 6-3, but that was as close as the Bears would get. Stanford scored the next five and led 12-3 at the break.

Murray and McMahon scored the first two goals of the second half and it was a running clock for the final 26:50.

The lead was as large as 17-4 when senior Sydney Shaw recorded her first career point with an assist on Julia Persche's goal with 11:20 remaining.

Senior Allie DaCar made three saves and allowed just four goals in over 47 minutes, while freshman Trudie Grattan made three saves in a little more than 12 minutes.

Massaro also had a team-high four ground balls and three caused turnovers. Junior Sandy Smith scooped up two ground balls, Taylor Scornavacco had two caused turnovers, and Lew also had four ground balls.

Stanford held the advantage in shots, 27-20, draw controls, 14-12, and ground balls, 24-21.

Stanford will play on Friday at 3 p.m. PT in the first-ever Pac-12 Tournament. The Cardinal awaits the winner of the No. 3 and No. 6 seeds.
