SARATOGA, Calif. – Makenzie Fischer scored five times, Aria Fischer added three and No. 2 Stanford wrapped up its regular season with a 9-2 win at No. 19 San Jose State on Sunday afternoon.
The elder Fischer continued her tear of late. In the six games since the Cardinal (16-2, 3-2 MPSF) returned from its break for final exams, Makenzie has scored 24 times (4.00 goals per game), including four five-goal performances. The sophomore's fourth goal of the day with 56 seconds to go in the third quarter was the 100th of her career.
Stanford has secured the No. 3 seed in the upcoming MPSF Tournament in Berkeley, Calif. and will have a rematch with sixth-seeded San Jose State (9-17, 0-5 MPSF) on Friday, April 27 at 11 a.m.
It took half a quarter for the Cardinal to settle in before three consecutive even-strength scores gave Stanford a 3-0 lead at the end of the first period.
Aria Fischer spun around her defender at five meters, walked it in to two and beat Tayler Peters with a skip shot to the top corner with 4:30 on the clock. Ninety seconds later Makenzie Fischer went near post for her first tally and with 1:30 to go from the right side of the pool she switched it up and scored at the far post.
San Jose State's first 6-on-5 opportunity resulted in a goal from Sheila Jensen one minutes into the second quarter, but the Spartans would be held scoreless for the next 22 minutes, until a late strike from Tessa Draper with 43 seconds remaining in the game.
Stanford answered Jensen's goal on the very next possession, with Katie Dudley working inside for her 18th of the season. At 5:37 it was Aria Fischer at two meters who hammered home her second to give the Cardinal a 5-1 advantage at the break.
The freshman Fischer scored again coming out of halftime with 6:04 to go in the third quarter when she spun around her defender like in the first and took it herself to complete her fourth hat trick of the year. At 4:45 Makenzie Fischer notched her hat trick with another skip, this time past Katelynn Thompson, before collecting her 100th late in the period.
Fischer would get her fifth in the fourth quarter on the power play with 3:22 to go. Stanford was 1-of-10 in 6-on-5 chances while San Jose State was 1-of-8.
Madison Berggren had three steals for the Cardinal and Aria Fischer added a pair. Julia Hermann made 10 saves in the cage, her third game in double figures this season, and lowered her goals against average to 4.58.
