Burks Homers in Finale

STANFORD, Calif. – Despite a solo home run by Whitney Burks, Stanford dropped the series finale to Cal, 8-1, Sunday, at Smith Family Stadium.

Burks hit her team-leading fifth home run of the season in the bottom of the third inning, cutting the Cal (33-13, 7-10 Pac-12) lead to 2-1 after three. It is the second straight series the redshirt junior has gone yard for Stanford (22-26, 2-16 Pac-12).

However, Cal responded with six runs in the fourth inning, including a grand slam by short stop Jazmyn Jackson, to secure the victory.

Junior pitcher Carolyn Lee (3-10) took the loss, giving up eight runs on eight hits in 4.0 innings pitched. Cal's Zoe Conley (15-10) earned the win, allowing just one run on eight hits in a complete game.

Freshman pitcher Maddy Dwyer took over for Lee in the fifth inning and retired all nine Cal batters she faced.

Burks finished the game 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Sophomores Hannah Howell and Kristina Inouye were also 2-for-3 on the afternoon. Seniors Arden Pettit and Victoria Molina had Stanford's other two hits.

Stanford will play its final midweek game on Tuesday at home against Santa Clara at 6 p.m.
