Cardinal Falls Short

TEMPE, Ariz. – A late two-run home run by Arizona State's DeNae Chatman lifted the No. 8 Sun Devils to a 3-2 win over Stanford, Sunday, at Farrington Stadium.

Trailing 2-1, Chatman's sixth inning home run just cleared the centerfield wall to give Arizona State (42-9, 15-6 Pac-12) the come-from-behind lead.

Stanford (23-29, 2-19 Pac-12) got on the board first, taking advantage of another Arizona State error – its eighth of the series. Sophomore Teaghan Cowles led off the game with a single and advanced to second on a fielding miscue by Sun Devil right fielder Kindra Hackbarth. Senior Arden Pettit picked up an RBI single to plate Cowles.

The Cardinal added to its lead in the second as junior Lauren Frost hit a solo home run to centerfield. It was the first long ball of the season for Frost and just the fifth of her career.

Arizona State scored its first run of the game in the fifth inning as left fielder Skylar McCarty hit a solo shot to left centerfield to cut the Cardinal lead in half.

Sophomore Nikki Bauer (2-6) tossed a complete game for the Cardinal, finishing with three strikeouts. She allowed three runs on seven hits and issued just one walk in the loss. Arizona State freshman G Juarez collected the win, moving to 23-3 overall. Senior Breanna Macha notched the save.

Cowles finished the afternoon 2-for-4 at the plate, while sophomore designated player Molly Fowkes was 2-for-2. Pettit was 1-for-1 with a walk, a hit-by-pitch and a sacrifice bunt.

Stanford returns to The Farm next week for its regular season finale as it hosts No. 10 Arizona, Thursday-Saturday, at Smith Family Stadium.
