Season in Review

STANFORD, Calif. – The Stanford men's golf team reached the NCAA Championships for the 11th time in 14 years and finished second at the NCAA Pacific Regionals, highlighting the 2017-18 season.
 
At the latter, the Cardinal closed with an 11-under-par 277, the lowest total of any team during the 54-hole event at The Reserve at Spanos Park in Stockton, California. Junior Brandon Wu led the way, firing rounds of 67-67-68 to capture second individually with a score of 14-under 202.
 
Stanford, ranked No. 14 in the final Golfstat poll, claimed six top five finishes, also securing runner-up spots at the Nike Golf Collegiate Invite and St. Mary's Invitational. The Cardinal collected third at The Goodwin, a premier 26-team tournament hosted by Stanford at Harding Park Golf Course in San Francisco.


 
In the first round at Harding Park, senior Jeffrey Swegle fired an 8-under-par 63, tying the third-lowest score in program history, and posted a career-best second place showing.
 
Wu and Swegle were named to the Division I PING All-Region Team by the Golf Coaches Association of America.
 
An All-Pac-12 first team selection, Wu paced Stanford by posting three top-five finishes. He was a force, placing in the top six in three of the first four tournaments. Wu also racked up a second at the Nike Golf Collegiate Invite (65-66-70, 201, -12) and led the squad with a 70.61 scoring average, securing four top 10's and seven top 25's.
 
Swegle and senior Franklin Huang collected All-Pac-12 second team nods, while junior Isaiah Salinda received honorable mention.
 
Salinda averaged 71.65 and recorded three top-10's and six top-20's. He secured a squad-high 15th-place finish at NCAA Championships at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Oklahoma with rounds of 71-69-75-73. Salinda was selected PING All-America honorable mention by the Golf Coaches Association of America, and won the Spooner Award picked by his Cardinal teammates for his tenacity and never-give-up attitude.

It marks the 14th consecutive year the program has produced an All-American.
 
Huang averaged 71.73 and chalked up three top-10's, including a tie for 10th at the Pac-12 Championships, where he started with a career-low 6-under 65. Huang was accorded the Tradition Award by his peers for leadership, work ethic, academic excellence and appreciation of the team and the university.


 
Swegle averaged 70.92 in nine starts and posted an eighth-place finish at the Pac-12 Championships, opening 67-65. Teammates selected him the Most Improved Player.
 
Ashwin Arasu earned the freshman scoring award by averaging 73.43.
 
Five Stanford student-athletes were recognized for academic achievement. Swegle was a Pac-12 All-Academic first team selection and compiled a 3.58 grade point average in math and computational science.
 
Senior Bradley Knox (3.49/symbolic systems) and sophomore Henry Shimp (3.66/undeclared) made the second team, while Huang and Wu received honorable mention.
