Four to World Cup

STANFORD, Calif. – Junior Sam Hiatt, sophomore Kiki Pickett and freshmen Naomi Girma and Sophia Smith have been selected to represent the United States at the FIFA U-20 World Cup, as announced Tuesday by head coach Jitka Klimkova.

The final roster was determined after a training camp last week in Portland, Oregon, and will travel to France for the championship, which takes place Aug. 5-24. The United States' roster is made up of 21 players, including five who will be college freshmen in 2018.

Hiatt, who hails from Newcastle, Washington, is one of six players who did not take part in the United States' World Cup qualifying, and one of four juniors on the roster. Hiatt registered one goal in nine appearances for Stanford in 2017 after transferring from Boston College following her freshman campaign.

Pickett, native to Santa Barbara, California, was a member of the Pac-12 All-Freshman team after starting 24-of-25 games at right back. She finished the season with one goal and four assists, earning Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week honors after scoring in the Cardinal's Pac-12 championship-winning, 3-1 win at USC on Oct. 29.

Girma, a versatile freshman from San Jose, has been a mainstay in the United States' youth setup since debuting with the U-17 team in 2016. Girma has been named to every U-20 camp this year, including helping the United States qualify for the U-20 World Cup in Trinidad and Tobago in January.

Smith, originally from Windsor, Colorado, enters the World Cup as the United States' leading scorer at the U-20 level with 21. She has scored in 10 of the United States' 15 games in 2018, including a current nine-match scoring streak. She is tied for fourth, all-time, in U-20 goals behind Sydney Leroux (29), Kelley O'Hara (24) and Lindsey Horan (24).
